How to Cover File Folders

From plain to tabbed, file folders come in a variety of sizes and types. These folders made out of card stock let you organize documents by category or any system of your liking. One way to customize file folders is by covering them with colored paper or paper containing an adhesive. Colored/adhesive paper is inexpensive, accepts ink readily and cuts easily for fitting on folders.

• Glue stick
• 12-inch by 12-inch colored paper, scrapbook paper or paper with an adhesive backing
• Credit or identification card
• Scissors or utility knife
• Marker (optional)

     Lay the file folder on a flat surface -- desk, workbench, table or other surface -- open with the outer portion of the folder facing up.

     Apply a layer of glue from a glue stick around the edges and the middle portion of the folder. For a thoroughly secure fit, apply a layer of glue horizontally and vertically over each panel of the file folder.

     Place a piece 12-inch by 12-inch colored paper or scrapbook paper gently on the file folder. Use a credit or identification card to smooth the paper onto the folder.

     If using paper that contains an adhesive backing, slowly peel the paper covering the back of the paper and lay the sticky paper adhesive side down on the file folder. Use a credit or identification card to smooth out the paper.

     Trim any excess paper hanging over the edges of the file folder using scissors or a utility knife. Use a maker to write a label on the file folder, if desired.
